Whirlpool Corporation met the many challenges of providing nutritious food in a weightless environment, leading to similar contracts in later years for the Apollo and Skylab programs. Whirlpool continued to grow and diversify in the 1960s. In 1962, Whirlpool Corporation won the contract to develop the feeding and waste management systems for NASA's Gemini project. |

By mid 1960 the Whirlpool brand name was strong and well established in the North America market. Based on its manufacturing and distribution growth, the company was routinely introducting a full line of new appliance products.

In 1969 the company was the first to introduce a residential trash compactor, the first new-to-market appliance in 30 years. In the 1970s, the company established Cool Line, the first toll-free consumer service support line, acquired the Ft. Smith, Arkansas, refrigeration plant, as well as the equity interest in Canadian appliance manufacturer Inglis, Ltd. The company's Brazilian interests continued to position Whirlpool for future global expansion.
