Whirlpool Corporation provides funding for Cornerstone Alliance, an economic development organization in Benton Harbor, Michigan, where Whirlpool has its global headquarters. A portion of the annual funding provided annually goes toward the state and federally-funded HOPE VI project.
Under the HOPE VI program, more than $25 million of public money is being used to demolish all public housing in the Benton Harbor community and replace it with approximately 385 single-family homes and townhouses. One of the requirements of HOPE VI is that public and private investment in social and life skill improvements equal the investment in the new housing. A collaboration of more 20 not-for-profit agencies are enlisting all available services within the community toward the 385 families who will receive the housing, thus helping to build and improve the Benton Harbor neighborhoods.
