Partnering with Others
Whirlpool Corporation partners with more than 50 organizations that are active in environmental initiatives. We were one of 13 founding members of the Business Environment Leadership Council, an advisory group to the Pew Center on Global Climate Change. In 2007, we joined a small number of companies on the Respect Table – a forum for corporate leaders to address common challenges and find common solutions for a more sustainable world. Together with two European non-profit organizations, the Respect Table is organizing a project to promote a new international agreement on Climate Change in 2009, to replace the Kyoto protocol, which ends in 2012.
We also are active members in the National Association of State Energy Officials, the National Association of Home Builders, the U.S. Green Building Council, the Alliance to Save Energy, the Alliance for Water Efficiency and the Energy Efficient Builders Association. We regularly consult with environmental advocates such as the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy and the Natural Resources Defense Council. We also work closely with the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on energy-efficiency standards, test procedures and the ENERGY STAR® program.
Beginning in 1975, we led in crafting the U.S. Energy Policy and Conservation Act, and we have consulted on every subsequent appliance energy efficiency legislation. In 1979, we helped craft the U.S. Federal Trade Commission Energy Labeling Rules, and we have led the industry in our involvement in helping to craft robust appliance efficiency standard and test procedures.
In 1992, two dozen electric utilities around the U.S. banded together to offer a prize for the most efficient refrigerator design, which beat 1993 federal standards by 25 percent or more and used no ozone-depleting chemicals. Whirlpool was named the winner of the Super Efficient Refrigerator Program, Inc. (SERP), launching our entry into a full offering of resource efficient appliances.
We also were at the forefront of a successful multi-year lobbying effort for state and federal energy efficiency tax incentives. We led the industry by helping develop the Green Lights Program, an EPA precursor to the ENERGY STAR program. Whirlpool is a 10-time winner of the ENERGY STAR partner of the year award, including four consecutive awards for Sustained Excellence.
