Quality family life, cultural diversity and lifelong learning are the focus areas for the Whirlpool Foundation's grantmaking. Using these social issues as a framework for our strategic and citizenship grants, Whirlpool Foundation proactively identifies outstanding nonprofit organizations that are addressing these social issues in innovative, collaborative, self-sustaining ways.
Quality Family Life
Family life has evolved in many ways. Households and families have decreased. However, the number of single mothers and single fathers leading these households has increased. More people are living alone, and they are waiting longer to get married. People also want successful home lives in addition to – but not at the expense of – successful work lives. All of these factors affect people in new and varying ways.
The goals of these grants are to:
- Strengthen family efforts to provide a secure, nurturing home environment and a solid foundation for the emotional well-being of all family members
- Enhance family communication and improve parenting capabilities and capacities to address the balance between quality parenting and job performance
Cultural Diversity
If no two people are alike, then diversity is all around us. Neighborhoods, workplaces, communities, and places of worship are populated by people with different background, cultures, tastes, opinions, etc. But it isn't enough to just have differences. It's when we embrace those differences and learn from them that we really make progress. Often, we discover that we're more alike than we are different and that how someone looks or dresses or prays has no bearing on how that person can positively contribute to society.
The goals of these grants are to:
- Support partnerships and actions that promote inclusive environments in Whirlpool Corporation communities.
- Promote better understanding of diverse cultures in daily life.
Lifelong Learning
Education should begin the moment a child is born, and we should continue that process for the rest of our lives. Children's minds are fertile soil for planting skills and lessons that can benefit them for years to come. Providing early educational opportunities is one of the most important investments we can make in our future. For adults, continuing their education can help them socially, in the workplace and with their families. The saying goes that “you learn something new every day.” Well, the opportunity for learning is certainly present. It's those who take advantage of these opportunities who make the most out of life.
The goals of these grants are to:
- Partner with families, communities and educational systems in advancing basic core skills at all ages.
- Create or expand advanced skills training and retraining opportunities responsive to the workforce needs of the 21st Century.
