news-MLK-service-2018Greg Fulmer wishes he could remind his younger self that school was let out for a reason on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

That’s why he, along with dozens of other Whirlpool Corp. employees, spent their Monday volunteering at schools, local shelters and other Southwest Michigan organizations.

“It’s a nice way to give back, especially for today,” Fulmer said in reference to the nationally recognized holiday. “It’s a good thing to do on this holiday. Growing up we had this day off and a good use of this could have been toward doing some service.”

Fulmer, who serves as the community lead for the Pride Network, said members of all eight Whirlpool employee resource groups (EGRs) planned to volunteer Monday or Tuesday as part of a service initiative known as “United We Serve.”

Whirlpool volunteers at the OutCenter in Benton Harbor, Michigan painted the main conference room, installed shelving and storage, and helped with IT work on the nonprofit’s public-use computers.

Volunteers from Whirlpool donated clothes, served food, and unpacked and sorted garments at the 6 Degrees Resale Store for Emergency Shelter Services.

At the LOGAN Autism Learning Center, Whirlpool volunteers came up with ideas for holiday crafts and then made kits for the children. They were also able to spend time with the students during lunch.

Whirlpool volunteers played Bingo with seniors at the Pine Ridge Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Stevensville, Michigan.

Whirlpool Veterans Association members joined the Lake Michigan College student volunteer activity of creating dried bean soup and rice packets for area food pantries.
